The most momentous experience for me as the National President, representing the United States was when I met my counterpart, Dennis Jordan, President of the National Council of Metal Detectors in England, while a member of Jimmy Sierra’s Discovery Tours in August, 1999. Since then, I have been fortunate to be a regular team member and look forward each year to “dig up a piece of England’s past”! Being a member of the team requires a respect of British Law. Why? I believe in what the metal detecting and archaeological community have accomplished in England and feel honored to have permission to detect there where many of our “finds” recovered, are recorded, and returned to us, once the required Export License has been granted. In many instances, we have donated to the Norwich Castle Museum, artifacts and coins which are on display for others to view. To uncover a Roman coin in a field, would lead one to believe that the last person holding that coin was probably lost by a Roman over two thousand years ago! Every sound we hear makes us wonder what part of history is beneath our feet? On the personal side, I am a single gal and mother of two grown daughters, Catherine and Melissa, as well as the grandmother of 4 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. I retired from 36 years of federal service on September 3, 2005 and moved from Sacramento, California to my new home in Peyton, Colorado where AMDA is now based. I have been detecting since 1987 and a member of several clubs. Since my resignation from FMDAC, May 25, 2001, I was approached by the late Ron Stockman to form with others, a new national organization for the hobby, thus, AMDA was formed and I became Chairperson, in September, 2001. Realizing there are many hobbyists who need more information about the various activities for metal detectorists, we offer a website at www.amdaonline.net. I will respond to your inquiries, if you will call me at (719) 749-0134 or by personally emailing me at: cgarrettwc@aol.com. Please come and take a look and join us in a future AMDA event. Thank you for your interest and support! Carolyn Garrett
